Hi. My
name is Risnayah. My hobby is traveling. The day was cold when my friends and I started
climbing the Mount
Sumbing in Wonosobo, Central Java, Indonesia. This mountain is so bare and pretty hard to pass. When I arrived in post 3, I left my backpack in the bush and covered it with raincoat. I did
this on purpose to lightened my load to the summit.
In the afternoon, the clouds began to grow large. The sky seemed to be shedding tears soon. I speed up my pace. We met other climbers who rushed down the
mountain. “The summit is
still far away. You have to immediately go down”, they said. We were confused. But we encouraged our selves to still reach the peak. It would be something different if we didn’t reach the top.
I was disappointed
at the summit. I couldn’t enjoy the view of the Mount Sindoro (known as the wife of Sumbing), Merapi and Merbabu which can be
seen from there. Everything was white, covered with
clouds.
When we descend,
heavy rain and strong wind came. It directly hit my small body. I remembered my raincoat that I left before. "Oh my God", I said. The wind was up to the skin. It was freezing. I was
shivering. Visibility was only a few steps ahead. No place to hide. We kept
going and had to immediately get to the climbing post before nightfall.
Inconceivable on a dark night, cold, rainy, and stormy,
I was still in the mountain.
It must be a
nightmare.
About 8 pm, we arrived at the base. Rain and strong wind didn’t subside as well. The post-climbing guard had been worried. He said that the storm was coming often uncertain lately.
Fortunately, we all saved.
It must be admitted that he was right. It was our fault. Tropical climate spoiled us so we were less concerned on weather information. In fact, the weather becomes uncertain now. The wind and rain become stronger. This experience will be a valuable learning for me as an amateur mountaineer.
